GFCI Reset Procedure:

PLEASE NOTE: ALL APPLIANCES SUCH AS HUMIDIFIERS, REFRIGERATORS, FREEZERS, TREADMILLS, AND SIMILAR ITEMS SHOULD HAVE THERE OWN CIRCUIT. THESE ITEMS SHOULD NOT BE PLUGGED INTO THE GENERAL PURPOSE OUTLETS.  THE MANUALS FOR THESE ITEMS TYPICALLY RECOMMEND DEDICATED CIRCUITS AS WELL

If the GFI is not resetting: Unplug any items that it may be protecting and attempt to reset it again. If it holds then you have an issue with one of the items you had plugged in.

If it still doesn’t reset, make sure it has power (circuit breaker/switch is on) try again. If it still doesn’t reset consult a professional.

Your home is protected with multiple GFCI (GFI) devices. They are required by code in certain areas where water could become a hazard. One GFI device often will protect other outlets. GFI devices trip from time to time and typically you can simply just reset them.  If the GFI doesn’t reset check out the simple GFI reset procedure below. Remember GFI’s trip because something causes them to. It’s usually is not the device itself.

Room by room detail:

In the kitchen:

The breaker in the panel is also the GFI protection device.  This would be items labeled in the panel such as kitchen 1 or kitchen 2, Dishwasher, Disposal, Microwave and sometimes Refrigerator (when required). Please note: the kitchen counter top and wall outlets are labeled kitchen 1 and kitchen 2, these may also be combined with dining and dinette.

In the garage:

There is one GFI device that protects the wall outlets that are inside the garage. (this GFI may protect exterior outlets that share garage wall)

There may be a “faceless” GFI that protects the POST light. IF your post light has a switch, IT WILL NEED TO BE ON for the GFI to be reset.

In the laundry:

The washer breaker is also the GFI protection. Any additional outlets in the laundry will be on with the washer circuit. (The 220v dryer is not GFI).

In the bathroom:

There is one GFI located in one of the bathrooms. It protects all of the BATHROOM outlets. It does not affect the bathroom lights.

If you have a whirlpool there will be a “faceless” GFI to protect the whirlpool circuit.

In the basement:

There is one general purpose GFI outlet that also may protect any additional basement outlets you purchased.

There may be another GFI on the sump pump circuit next to the sump pump outlet for general purpose use. You should only plug the sump pump into the provided single outlet, do not plug the sump pump into the GFI.

Outside outlets:

All outside outlets are GFI protected, sometimes they share a GFI device. Common GFI Locations for these would be the Garage, or other Exterior Outlets.
